The Jo (staff) was developed by the Samurai during Japan's feudal period. The Kata is a series of programmed movements and is normally practiced in a slow stylistically controlled manner.
Aikido call the Kata a movement of nature and peace. Aikidokas in China practice the Kata as a salutation to the four holy creatures; Sieryu (Dragon), Suzaku (Phoenix), Genbu (Turtle and Snake) and Byakko (White Tiger). The four holy creatures represent each direction; north, south, east, west.
